CHARACTER
Name: Chun-Li
Canon: Street Fighter
Age: 25
Timeline: After the events of Street Fighter II, where Chun-Li feels that Bison's defeat is enough for her father's spirit to rest in peace.
Personality: One of Chun-Li's primary characteristics is her strength -- not just of body, but of heart and soul. She's extraordinarily responsible and dedicated for a woman of her age, having achieved her status as an agent of Interpol when she was only 19 or 20. One might say this is because of her father's disappearance, but it seems likely that she's always had a natural sense of discipline. She began studying the martial arts at the age of five, inspired by Bruce Lee, and has excelled at her training. It's also likely that she attended a military school when she was growing up, based on canon art that shows her in uniform as a teenager. She has a strong belief in justice, but tempered with mercy -- her only desire was to put Bison behind bars, not to take his life to satisfy a lust for revenge. With an unbreakable moral code, Chun-Li is definitely one of the good guys, dependable and reliable for anyone who needs her.
As strong as she is, Chun-Li is also elegant and feminine. She acts and dresses like a lady, incapable of crudeness or vulgarity. While she can be a little petulant or sulky should she lose a fight, she's nonetheless very gracious to her fellow opponents outside of the tournament...so long as they aren't criminals, of course. While most of her feminine qualities are positive, she falls under a few stereotypes as well, in that she doesn't like to reveal her weight or her age, and gets touchy when either are brought up.
When she's not hunting after felons, Chun-Li can be downright friendly. She's engaging and extroverted, unafraid to talk to others, and seems to enjoy other people's company. Her easygoing nature makes her very approachable. She has a fondness for kids and young people, with an almost motherly sort of charm in that she will gladly protect the younger folks and even instruct them should they wish to train under her guidance.
Chun-Li has a high sense of confidence and self-worth. She's proud of her body, and trains hard on a daily basis to maintain her health and physique. She's independent, but not prideful to a point where she won't accept help when needed. She's worked well with others in the past, including Charlie Nash, in order to attain a common and worthy goal. Nonetheless, she's capable of taking care of herself, and is unlikely to become clingy or needy.
Her pride is a little more apparent when she's in a competitive state, however. She's not above playfully trash-talking an opponent, or boasting about her accomplishments, if it'll give her an edge. Chun-Li absolutely hates to lose, though, and may sulk or grumble for a while after suffering a defeat. Eventually she'll recover and be a good sport...just not at first. Normally she's very mature, but there's a touch of childishness that emerges when she wins, or loses, in actual combat.
Perhaps her biggest conflict stems from the indecision about what to do with her life, after dismantling the Shadaloo organization. It was always her biggest goal, but once it's accomplished, she isn't sure what to do next. A part of her wants to live as an ordinary young woman, having fun and living her life to the fullest. But there's also a strong tie to her work with Interpol, and serving the weak and innocent. In later games, it's shown that she chooses Interpol for many years before retiring to become a teacher, instructing children and teenagers in martial arts. But from her current canon point in time, she hasn't yet made up her mind.
Background: There are two helpful links to Chun-Li's character history, and the history of the game series as a whole. Because of all the diverging storylines and nonlinear game releases, this guide covers the main points of what's canon and what isn't. Street Fighter II was released in 1991, so Chun-Li's age might vary in that regard (she was born in 1968). I put her age at 25 to be on the safe side, as this would safely place her between Street Fighter II's events and Street Fighter IV. It should be noted that although the games were set during the 90's, the world's technology seems to be more advanced by about a decade at least, so she's not unfamiliar with cell phones and computers/laptops. An overview of Chun-Li herself can be found here.
Abilities: Her most notable skill is her ability to harness and control chi through martial arts. With this, she's able to quicken her moves (most notably with her Lightning Kick attack), and throw projectile fireball-like attacks (Kikouken). As a lesser known skill, she took 6th place in an international sharpshooting competition, and is also accomplished at playing the ehru.
Network/Actionspam Sample:
[It feels like a dream at first. An old city, blanketed in twilight. She's vaguely aware of a train's whistle, and the clatter of the great locomotive as it starts to roll down the tracks. She blinks once, twice, and again, each time bringing greater lucidity to her situation. Soon it becomes clear that this is no dream.]
[Chun-Li looks down, realizing she's still wearing her combat qipao, and the trademark spiked bracelets. That's not unusual. What IS unusual is the pocketwatch she's holding. It doesn't belong to her, she knows that much, so she lifts the device to inspect it. This city... Somewhere in England, perhaps? France? She can't quite say, nor does she know how she got here to begin with. Maybe the pocketwatch contains a clue. Her thumb depresses the button, opening the watch, but it's not a clock face she sees at all.]
Eh? What the...?
[Is it broadcasting? Somehow she must have activated it. Someone may even be listening on the other end. Are they friendly? Hostile? Only one way to find out.]
Okay, this isn't exactly what I had in mind when I filed a request for some time off!
[Hilaaarious. Her small, wry smile disappears as she glances around, trying and failing to pinpoint her location.]
Where is this place, anyway? At first I thought it was some crazy dream, but considering the technology being used, I don't think it's I've ever been on earth. If it is, well, guess I'll just feel silly, then.
...Little help?
Prose Log Sample: It had been a tough fight for everyone involved, and it required the heaviest kind of firepower. Chun-Li had been lucky enough to be fighting on the outskirts, opting to flank the foot soldiers with her hand-to-hand combat skills as there wasn’t much she could do against the enormous leader. As such, she wasn’t caught in the surprise explosive aftermath that leveled a small portion of the city, and injured nearly everyone who was focused on taking down the big guy.
Once the smoke cleared, a role call went out on the communicators to apprise everyone’s status. The ones most seriously injured were tended to by the healers. Chun-Li herself had a few scrapes and bruises, but nothing she couldn’t fix without a first aid kit. Her neighbor, Roy, had not been so fortunate. It seemed he would be laid up for quite a while.
Well, that was one way to finally get him to reset, she’d teased.
Advising him to stay in bed for a while with the promise of a hot meal, Chun-Li made her way to his residence with two bags of groceries tucked in her arms. The door was unlocked, so she let herself inside and busied herself getting acquainted with his kitchen. There wasn’t a lot to work with, foodwise or utensilwise, but she found a skillet and some plates. That was all she needed.
She diced the vegetables with a broad knife, the blade dancing in her quick and nimble fingers. A dash of sesame oil in the pan to make it sizzle, a splash of white wine for flavor, and plenty of garlic and spices to dress up the dish. It wasn’t long at all before she was ready to present a dish of sliced beef in savory sauce, coupled with broccoli and peppers on a bed of hot rice. She didn’t think he’d say no to a small bottle of sake to go with it.
Chun-Li smiled as she worked. It was kind of nice to do something like this for another person. She was so accustomed to taking care of herself, doing things on her own, that she’d forgotten the warm glow that came from service for a friend, or loved one. She’d made meals like this for her father nearly every night when she was a teenager, and he’d always eat with a smile, even if she’d burned the food. It was a good memory, and one that she cherished.
“You awake?” she called out with a light tap of her knuckles on the bedroom door, before nudging it open with her shoulder. “I made you one of my specialties, packed with vitamins and protein. You’ll be back on your feet before you know it.”
